Developmental Delay in Children:
Signs, Causes & When to Get Help

Early intervention is the single most powerful tool for a child with developmental delay. Here is what every parent needs to know.

What Is Developmental Delay?

Developmental delay means a child is not reaching expected milestones — in speech, movement, social skills, or thinking — at the typical age. It does not mean a child will never catch up. With early support, many children close the gap significantly. The key is catching it early.

Early Warning Signs by Age

By 6 Months

  • Does not smile or react to faces
  • Does not respond to sounds
  • Does not reach for objects

By 12 Months

  • No babbling or pointing
  • Does not say single words
  • Does not wave bye-bye

By 2 Years

  • Fewer than 50 words
  • Does not use 2-word phrases
  • Does not imitate actions or words

By 3 Years

  • Speech is hard to understand
  • Does not play with other children
  • Cannot follow simple instructions

Types of Developmental Delay

  • Speech & Language Delay: The most common type. Affects how a child talks and understands words.
  • Motor Delay: Affects gross motor (walking, jumping) or fine motor (holding a pencil, buttoning) skills.
  • Cognitive Delay: Affects thinking, learning, and problem-solving.
  • Social & Emotional Delay: Difficulty connecting with others, sharing, or managing emotions.
  • Global Developmental Delay: Two or more areas affected at the same time.

What Causes It?

Causes vary widely and are not always known. Common factors include premature birth, genetic conditions (such as Down syndrome), hearing or vision problems, lead exposure, brain injury, or limited early stimulation. In many cases, no single cause is identified — and that is okay. What matters most is getting the right support in place.

What Should You Do If You Are Concerned?

Trust your instincts. Parents are often the first to notice something is different. If you have any concern, bring it up at your child's next well-child visit — or book a dedicated developmental screening appointment. Do not wait for the next scheduled checkup if you are worried now.

At Absolute Care Pediatrics, we offer:

  • Developmental screenings at every well-child visit
  • Autism screening at 18 and 24 months
  • ADHD assessments
  • ABA therapy referrals
  • Virtual developmental consultations — available in 7 states

Why Early Intervention Matters

The brain develops fastest in the first three years of life. Therapy and support started early — speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, or ABA — can dramatically improve outcomes. Children who receive early intervention often enter school ready to learn alongside their peers. Waiting is the one thing that does not help.

Concerned About Your Child's Development?
